TootArd (INT) at Alice cph

Back in 2018 TootArd performed at ALICE with the songs from “Laissez passers”. A record drawing heavily on inspirations from Arab psych and guitar infused desert blues. At the same time the record was a deep reflection on the stateless identity of the group, being from the occupied Golan Heights, where the inhabitants can’t own a passport but need to carry a specific document, “Laissez passers”, if they need to travel.

The inventive duo of brothers – Hasan and Rami Nakhleh – now return with an infectious re-imagining of their sound. Jammed full of pop hooks and quarter-tone melodic lines, “Migrant Birds” unleashes a disco whirlwind that pays homage to the Middle Eastern dancefloor scenes of the 80’s. Retro funky meets hi-sheen contemporary. But as the title indicates, their reflection on borders, migration and a utopian longing for a nomadic movement is still intact in the music....

We’re very much looking forward to bring them back to Copenhagen, where they will turn ALICE into a steaming Beirut night club with sweeping disco strings, quarter-tone pop and booming drum machines.

Arabisk disco fra Golan-højderne.

Var man til TootArds koncert på ALICE tilbage i 2018 vil man sikkert huske den medrivende koncert, hvor gruppen forbandt dansable rytmer med guitardrevet ørkenblues og psykedelisk arabisk rock.

Dette udtryk fra også bærende for deres forrige album, “Laissez passers”, hvis titel henviste til det særlige dokument, som de to brødre fra bandet - Hasan og Rami Nakhleh - må bære, når de skal rejse. De bor nemlig i det besatte område Golan-højderne, der grænser op til Syrien. Her har beboerne status som statsløse og kan derfor ikke eje pas.

Fast forward til 2020 og TootArds nye album, “Migrant Birds” (Glitterbeat). Væk er de støvede guitarer og de rockede elementer. Til gengæld er der skruet markant op for de dansable beats og de medrivende melodier. Albummet er nemlig en hyldest til arabisk pop og disco fra 80’erne og ikke mindst en kærlighedserklæring til festkulturen og den flamboyante stemning fra Beiruts legendariske natklubber.

Som titlen antyder, er bandet dog fortsat optaget af ideen om en nomadisk utopi sat overfor en politisk virkelighed med indskrænkende grænser. Musikken er således på én gang nostalgisk optaget af en dekadent festkultur, som i dag har trange kår i Mellemøsten, og optaget af utopien om at kunne være som en trækfugl, der ubesværet lader hånt om de grænser, som mennesker har indtegnet på kortet. Denne dobbelthed skaber en poetisk melankoli i den på overfladen så sorgløse musik og gør “Migrant Birds” til et på én gang festligt og vedkommende værk.
