MORF 1, created in 2005, is a sonic piece in which the course of events is defined by instructions written on cards. On each card there are instructions to follow and implement in a sonic action. The resemblance to an ordinary card game is strong; the number of cards is 52, and each member, or “player”, has a pile of cards to be played by certain rules. MORF 1 puts focus on the balance between individuality and adaptation, slow process of change, and openness concerning content and shape.
Since the creation of the piece, MORF 1 have been performed a numerous of times of and with very different ensembles, with professional musicians and with amateurs. One of the most significant characters of the piece is the possibility to a polyphonic, intricate, fabric of sounds, with the instructions from the cards individually interpreted by the musicians. The musicians reside as long as they want on each card, and continue to the next one when they choose.
