Mads Tolling Quartet udvidet med sangerinden Sinne Eeg at Den Sorte Diamant

The Danish jazz violinist and newly baked 40-year-old Mads Tolling, who for the past 20 years has had a career in USA, is playing a new concert repertoire from the Danish-American songbook.
During his 20 years outside Denmark, Mads Tolling has so far won two Grammies as well as a ‘Rising Star Award’ from the respected American Downbeat Magazine. To this can be added eight years’ membership of the bass player Stanley Clarke’s band and the crossover string ensemble Turtle Island Quartet.

Tolling established his Danish quartet in 2014 with Jacob Fischer, since when he has done well over 150 concerts in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Germany. Apart from Mads Tolling and Jacob Fischer, the quartet consists of Matthias Petri on bass and Andreas Svendsen on drums. For this evening’s concert, the repertoire reflects the Danish musicians’ influence in USA, and the quartet offers samples of how Danish songs and compositions over the years have been played in that vast country. Focus will also be on the interest shown by American jazz musicians on giving concerts in Denmark. This culminated in the 1960s’ Jazzhus Montmartre, which was a highly popular scene of the Copenhagen jazz audiences.

I sine mange år i udlandet har Mads Tolling indtil videre høstet to Grammy-priser samt en ”Rising Star Award” fra det anerkendte amerikanske Downbeat Magazine. Hertil kommer otte års medlemskab i henholdsvis bassisten Stanley Clarkes band og i crossover-strygergruppen Turtle Island Quartet.

Tolling etablerede i 2014 sin danske kvartet med Jacob Fischer og har siden da spillet vel over 150 koncerter i Danmark, Sverige, Norge og Tyskland. Ud over Mads Tolling og Jacob Fischer består kvartetten af Matthias Petri på bas og Andreas Svendsen på trommer. Den optrådte sidst i Den Sorte Diamant i 2016 for at fejre Svend Asmussens 100-årsfødselsdag. Ved den lejlighed var sangerinden Sinne Eeg også med på scenen.
Til aftenens koncert afspejler repertoiret danske musikeres indflydelse i USA, og kvartetten giver prøver på, hvordan danske sange og kompositioner igennem årene er blevet spillet i det store land. Ligeledes bliver der sat fokus på interessen fra amerikanske jazzmusikere i at give koncerter i Danmark. Dette kulminerede i 60’ernes Jazzhus Montmartre, som blev en meget populær scene for det københavnske jazzpublikum.
