Bobby Zankel turns 70 this month and to celebrate, he's bringing his exuberance to @exuberance. Why not go all out and make it New Year’s Eve?
Bobby is a legend in this town. First, because of his amazing and prodigious work since he hit Philly in 1975. But also because of his prior associations with legends like Cecil Taylor, William Parker, Ray Anderson, Jimmy Lyons and Andrew Cyrille.
As sideman, he’s played with Sonny Gillette/Hank Mobley Quintet, Sunny Murray Group, Jymie Merrittʼs Forerunners, Odean Popeʼs Sounds of the Circle, Johnny Colesʼ Mill Creek Orchestra, Tyrone Brownʼs Group, Ruth Naomi Floyd Ensemble, Edgar Bateman Quintet, and Mogauwane Mahoele....

Bobby is a legend in this town. First, because of his amazing and prodigious work since he hit Philly in 1975. But also because of his prior associations with legends like Cecil Taylor, William Parker, Ray Anderson, Jimmy Lyons and Andrew Cyrille.
As sideman, he’s played with Sonny Gillette/Hank Mobley Quintet, Sunny Murray Group, Jymie Merrittʼs Forerunners, Odean Popeʼs Sounds of the Circle, Johnny Colesʼ Mill Creek Orchestra, Tyrone Brownʼs Group, Ruth Naomi Floyd Ensemble, Edgar Bateman Quintet, and Mogauwane Mahoele.
His Warriors of the Wonderful Sound big band has featured Muhal Richard Abrams, Steve Coleman, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Dave Liebman, Marty Ehrlich, Don Byron, Rene McLean, David Murray, Steve Lehman, Jaleel Shaw and Odean Pope, among others.
His original voice as an altoist and as a composer are powerfully displayed over 7 albums with colleagues including Johnny Coles, Odean Pope, Uri Caine, Ralph Peterson, Jr., Marilyn Crispell, Tyrone Brown, John Blake, Sumi Tonooka, Dave Burrell, William Parker and Muhammad Ali. Seems like 70 years well spent.
Appearing with Bobby for this NYE blowout:
Sumi Tonooka—our friend and frequent performer @exuberance—is 2019 recipient of the New Jazz Works grant from Chamber Music America. She is leader or co-leader on 8 magnificent albums. She is founder the Alchemy Sound Project composers collective. A fierce pianist and composer, she teaches at the Kimmel Center and the University of the Arts.
Born in Philadelphia, bassist, composer, and pianist Richard Hill graduated from the acclaimed performing arts high school (CAPA) and attended Penn State. He has performed with Jackie McLean, Nicholas Payton, Frank Foster, David Murray, Sumi Tonooka, Jaleel Shaw, Bilal, and many others. He was recently awarded the prestigious Kimmel Center Jazz Residency and is a veteran of the Air Force.
Nazir Ebo has been performing on drums, since he was 9 years old as part of the Clef Club Youth Ensemble and the Kimmel Center Youth Orchestra. He has recorded with Jamaladeen Tacuma alongside Odean Pope, toured with the brilliant British saxophonist Soweto Kint, performed with Tim Warfield, David Murray, Steve Coleman, Sumi Tonooka, Immanuel Wilkins and many others. Nazir graduated from Girard Academy Music Program (GAMP) where he studied the bass, on which he is now the Principal with the Philadelphia Symphonia. His older brother Justin Faulkner has been a member of the Branford Marsallis Quartet for many years and is a great mentor and supporter.
Join us for this electrifying ensemble at our first New Year’s Eve salon. No hipper way to ring in 2020 in Philadelphia.
