About
Brittany Anjou is a Brooklyn based composer, pianist, and multi-instrumentalist. Channeling Duke Ellington to Bikini Kill in her solo repertoire, she is one of a few to record and tour with the elusive godmothers of punk, The Shaggs. In 2019, she released her debut album, Enamio Reciprokataj, on Origin Records, to critical acclaim. She is the lead singer of experimental metal punk band Bi TYRANT, and has shared the stage with artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Ernestine Anderson, Clark Terry and Elysian Fields.
Starting from the age of twelve Brittany has performed in award winning jazz ensembles throughout the U.S.A., Europe, Africa and the Middle East. She obtained her degree in jazz at New York University under the mentorship of Stefon Harris, Don Friedman, and Ralph Alessi, and graduated while in Ghana studying traditional Ghanaian xylophone at the Dagara Music Center. Anjou was a key support musician in the mid 2010s revival of 1960s all-girl outsider music band, The Shaggs, and supported Dot Wiggin in the studio recording 2013 album, Ready! Get! Go!. Anjou has directed, arranged, orchestrated, and composed for many artists, including her own ensembles, The Brittany Anjou Trio, L.A.R.C.E.N.Y (25 piece chamber orchestra), Bi TYRANT, Ghanaian Gyil Gala with Alfred Kpebsaane, and BEWAA, her original ensembles featuring Ghanaian xylophone. Currently in residence at the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed Cultural Center opera house in Kuwait, she works as a freelance composer, session musician, educator, headliner, and support performer. ...
