Formed in November of 2017, The Quintet is a jazz ensemble dedicated to bringing jazz music back to the forefront of American culture, in particular targeting America’s youth. The Quintet, featuring Jake Lee on trumpet, Nathan Lee on tenor saxophone, Danny Freiband on guitar, Tim Walters on bass, and Oliver Mayman on drums, debuted in full coat and tie at the annual B-Side Battle of the Bands — primarily a rock band competition — in Ann Arbor, Michigan. After being awarded second place with the full support of an enthusiastic teenage audience, it became clear that jazz could still be relevant in the lives of young people, and that everyone could appreciate it on some fundamental level. With this in mind, our ensemble began to look for other ways to interest young people in the genre. We believe one of the biggest barriers between them and jazz music is the inaccessibility it's often associated with. Through both original compositions and reinvented jazz classics, The Quintet strives to break down that barrier, presenting jazz in a way that’s accessible to all while still staying true to the genre’s unique origins and rich history....

In the few short months The Quintet has been together, it has played at various local events and music festivals, most notably being awarded second place in the junior open division at the prestigious 2018 M-Prize International Chamber Arts Competition.
