Two of the greatest instrumentalists of the young Brazilian generation have formed a new duo to look anew at choro, the first national music of their native country. While they share Brazil's cultural heritage, each brings to the collaboration unique skills and experience whose complementary qualities will produce a fresh and evocative interpretation of the musical form that threads itself throughout Brazilian history.

Danilo Brito is an award winning wizard of the mandolin and an authority in the art of playing choro. Guitarist João Luiz is winner of the Concert Artists Guild award, one of the principals in the Brasil Guitar Duo, and an accomplished chamber music performer and composer.

The two have chosen works from the period of history when mandolinist Jacob do Bandolim established the heart of choro repertoire. João Luiz's arrangements approach them with a chamber music sensibility, sharing the melodic line between the two players and sensitive to the resulting textures.

The intimacy of the duo opened another possibility, to present waltzes by the composers who created choro, material that Brito knows well but infrequently plays with his own quintet. And to these classics they have added new works of their own, building a repertoire that spans a century, united by the verve and structure of the original, and inspired to blossom anew in the 21st century.

The performances will be drawn from a repertoire of compositions by Jacob do Bandolim, Orlando Silveira, Edurado Souto, Pixinguinha, Danilo Brito, and João Luiz.
