About

8:00PM HELENA KAY/BARRY GREEN Award-winning saxophonist Helena Kay moved to London from Scotland in 2012 to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In 2015 she won the Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year Competition and on graduation in 2016 was awarded the Anjool Malde Jazz Prize. Since then she has gone on to rapidly establish herself as an impressive force on the UK jazz scene. A Guildhall Artist Fellow for the jazz department at the Guildhall School, she also maintains a freelance career as a performer and teacher, including recent performances at both the Glasgow and London Jazz Festivals. Barry Green is a wonderful modern jazz pianist whose fluent and melodic playing has been making an impact in the UK and beyond for some years now. After studying classical and jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in the late 90's, Barry quickly became recognised as a player of poise and creativity. Over the last few years he has performed regularly at the likes of Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express Dean Street, The Wigmore Hall, The Purcell Room and The Vortex, as well of course as appearing many times here at the Club. Internationally he has played at clubs and festivals in Spain, Slovenia, Sweden, Norway, Croatia, Turkey, Italy and France, and has performed with headliners at the Cheltenham, Cork, Berlin and North Sea Jazz festivals. His CV is vast, including work with the likes of Bobby Watson, Charles McPherson, Bobby Wellins, Ian Shaw, Anita Wardell, Richie Cole and Us3, as well as his own trio. Barry is currently a professor of jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Also featured this evening are two of the finest rhythm players around, Jeremy Brown-bass and Matt Skelton-drums. This is a fantastic "inter-generational" quartet featuring two leading musicians of their respective generations performing classic jazz standards in a unique but accessible way and highly recommended....
