Hailed as one of Canada's leading avant-garde/free-jazz bands, her band LINA ALLEMANO FOUR is known internationally for their inventiveness, playfulness, and synergy as they deftly blur the line between composition and improvisation. The band has been touring extensively for the past 10 years all across Europe, USA and Canada. Their music has been described as abstract melodicism, combining lush colours with dense free-flowing rhythmic textures. "Lina Allemano and her band have created an eclectic sound that makes its own synthesis of tradition and avant-garde, of structure and freedom, of clever composition and emotional depth, of abstraction and warmth... beautiful and moving and fun." (The Free Jazz Collective, Belgium). The band's 4th internationally-acclaimed album, Live at the Tranzac, has been receiving very favourable attention from reviewers internationally, making a splash particularly in Europe and USA. Julius Masri/Matt Engle/Travis Woodson (Philadelphia): Julius Masri is a multi-instrumentalist based in Philadelphia, and is a performer/ composer for the city's modern dance community at large. Born in Tripoli, Lebanon, he moved to the States in 1990, and picked up drumming a year later. He studied with famed Philadelphia instructors Carl Mottola and Elaine Hoffman Watts, and, as an undergrad at Bard College, AACM's Thurman Barker, Richard Teitelbaum, and Joan Tower. As a drummer, Julius performs in such bands as hasidic punk group Electric Simcha, psychotic Ragtime duo Mahogany Stompers, Metal Duo Night Raids, Van Sutra with guitarist George Draguns, (of Don Caballero), and countless other projects. He also performs on circuit modified keyboards in duos such as Superlith, with Trombonist Dan Blacksberg (Deveykus, Anthony Braxton Quartet), Thurman Barker duo, and electronic music phenom Joo Won Park. Julius has also composed and performed music for many Philadelphia based choreographers, and is currently working with Graffito Works dance collective.
Matt Engle grew up ten minutes outside of Philadelphia in South Jersey. He now resides in Philadelphia where he is a working member of the music scene. He has an integral role in the longstanding improvisational outfit Shot x Shot, as both a performer and composer. Travis Woodson is a composer, arranger, improviser, and multi-instrumentalist who has collaborated with various Philadelphia musicians and dancers. During the summer of 2012, he premiered a series of compositions and arrangements for three guitars, as a part of the Archer Spade Performance Series.
Bonnie Kane/Ricardo Lagomasino duo (Philadelphia):
Bonnie Kane (sax/flute/electronics) "I view my work as part of the next generation of the avant-garde - or at least, an evolutionary branch - formed from equal exposure to the avant-garde, hard core and the psychedelic: listening to Albert Ayler, Sun Ra, and Captain Beefheart, while simultaneously going to Butthole Surfers and Dead Kennedys shows; opening for White Zombie, The Boredoms, and Nik Turner, and playing the Improvised and Otherwise, What is Jazz, Brno and No Jazz Festivals. I can present my work to you as noise, free jazz, psych rock, free improv, jam band, bio-composition - along with a bunch of other labels as needed. Pure this or that? No."
Ricardo Lagomasino has been drumming since the age of 10. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Jazz Performance from Oberlin Conservatory in 2006. During college, he studied with jazz greats Billy Hart, Jamey Haddad, Ralph Peterson, Jr., Joe Chambers, classical percussionist Michael Rosen, and others.
After finishing college, he started touring throughout North America and Europe with Capillary Action, with whom he recorded their record, So Embarrassing. In 2007, he began touring and recording with Joe Lally, bassist for iconic Washington, DC band Fugazi. He can be heard on Lally's second record, Nothing is Underrated. For the last six years, Ricardo has co-led Many Arms, a NYC/Philadephia-based power trio, with Nick Millevoi on guitar and Johnny DeBlase on bass. Their last two records were released on John Zorn's Tzadik Label. In 2013, Ricardo joined the Washington, DC-based, self-described "Compulsively Apologetic Rock Group" Deleted Scenes as a full-time member to record their latest album, Lithium Burn.
As a session drummer, Ricardo has recorded and performed with Lushlife, Buried Beds, George Korein, Norwegian Arms, Split Red, and many others. He lives in Philadelphia, PA with his wife and two cats. Ricardo endorses C&C Custom Drums and Paiste cymbals.
