More information about the artists, this mentoring initiative, The Jazz Gallery and Elysium Furnace Works follows below. EFW's event lineup for next year begins with two wide-ranging, distinctive and eclectic concerts in March 2019, both taking place at Beacon's acoustically sublime Howland Cultural Center:
March 16: Matt Mitchell — With his music hailed as "smart and dazzling" by Philadelphia Magazine and "compelling, even startling two-handed abandon" by the Detroit Free Press, the acclaimed cutting-edge pianist and composer Mitchell kicks off EFW's 2019 season with a rare solo performance.
March 29: Mike Baggetta/100 and Zero/16 Hundred Pound Pig — Called a "NY Guitar poet" by Wilco guitarist Nels Cline and “beguilingly atmospheric” by Time Out New York, the inimitable guitarist Baggetta leads truly one-of-a-kind trio featuring the punk rock legend, Minutemen/fIREHOSE bassist Mike Watt, and drummer Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits, Mavis Staples, T Bone Burnett, David Lynch, among many others), unleashing an utterly unique post-genre improvisation groove. Two of the toughest Hudson Valley rock bands, 100 and Zero and 16 Hundred Pound Pig, round out this triple-heavyweight slugfest.
_______________________
Mentorship has always been a key theme in jazz history. Most of today’s great jazz musicians were raised through informal channels and gained invaluable experience working alongside their heroes. Future generations of great jazz will depend on the continuation of this community-minded mentoring tradition that is, unfortunately, becoming less common as jazz education has become more formalized in conservatory and university settings. The Jazz Gallery developed its Mentorship Program to cultivate a group of senior-level jazz musicians as mentors and to provide aspiring musicians with the opportunity to learn the music and business of jazz under the guidance of their contemporary heroes. These young musicians will have the opportunity to learn by preparing for and performing in 4 concerts that are booked as a mini-tour, which will provide mentees with the opportunity to deepen their creative practice and performance skills. This will also teach mentees more practical skills of being working artists—skills set that are not taught in conservatory classrooms. Mentors, along with their regular collaborators, will work with their mentees to prepare the young artists for four professional performances that will be presented at The Jazz Gallery and our partnering presenters in the NY, CT, and PA area. Elysium Furnace Works and the Howland Cultural Center are proud to support The Jazz Gallery's Mentorship Program by producing this concert presenting Kris Davis and her mentee, David Leon.
