Hosted by the Philadelphia Jazz Legacy Project and the sixth in an online series focusing on the many aspects of jazz in Philadelphia, past and present. This discussion is about the dramatic story of Union Local 274 of the American Federation of Musicians (AFM), chartered in 1935 after black musicians in Philadelphia were denied admission to local 74 (the white musicians union of the AFM). So we have on hand the foremost expert on Philly's black musicians' union its members and its history. Dr. Diane Turner will discuss her research on the important moment in history when Union Local 274 (the last black musicians' union in the country) fought against integrating with Union Local 74 since the black union was already integrated with white musicians and the white union wasn't.
